May 1854-January 1855 James Barber, T Abrahams
Joseph Saxon had enjoyed a highly successful 1853 when his horses were trained by Mr Hopward of Newton-le-Willows, and had used his new-found wealth to build Saxon House and stables in Lambourn. In May 1854 the premises were ready for occupation and he moved his entire string from Lancashire to Berkshire, appointing his jockey T Abrahams as his trainer, although Abrahams continued to ride in selected races.

Abrahams also acted as trainer to James Barber, based at neighbouring Seven Barrows. One of the horses which Saxon brough south with him was Cleveland, who had won the Great Warwickshire Handicap in March 1854, and Abrahams sent him north again to contest the Lancaster Cup which he won at 5/1. Abrahams, a new trainer, faced a huge task in getting to know the horses in two stables, but showed he was prepared to aim high by entering 4 horses in the Cesarewitch; 3-y-o Domino allocated 7st 5lbs, 4-y-o Cobnut with 7st 4lbs, 6-y-o The Black Doctor allocated 6st 12lbs, and 3-y-o Barrel with 5st 7lbs, two of which were Saxon's and the other two were Barber's. In the event Barber's Domino (50/1) and Cobnut (8/1) were unplaced behind Mr Greville's Muscovite (3/1 fav), with Saxon's horses not taking up their entries. At the turn of the year Abrahams transferred to Lewes and was replaced by Samual Arnold.

February 1855-1856 James Barber, Samuel Arnold
Samuel Arnold, born in 1807, was appointed trainer to the duo Joseph Saxon and James Barber, at Saxon House and Seven Barrows respectively in February 1855 when T Abrahams moved to Lewes, Sussex. The pair, who had experienced a difficult 1854 season, disposed of a large proportion of their stock, although they did hold on to Cobnut and Domino, even though Cobnut did not run throughout the entire season, and added newer stock which they hoped would be more productive. Saxon's stable had a string of 9 which contested at least one race during the season, whilst Barber had just 4, although Pretty Boy swapped between the 2 in terms of ownership. By any measure the season was, once again disappointing, their horses racing 75 times, but only 3 horses, Mary, Domino and Hazlenut managed wins, and Evangeline did not win whilst trained by Sam Arnold, but did win 3 times after she was sold. Joseph Saxon did win the prestigious Aintree Plate at Liverpool with Mary when partnered by champion jockey George Fordham.
In contrast to 1855, the next year was a spectacularly successful year for Saxon and Barber, with Pretty Boy being Barber's best horse, landing the Liverpool Cup, Stamford Gold Cup, Marquis of Westminster Plate at Chester, Her Majesty's 100 Guineas Plate at Goodwood and the Goodwood Stakes at the Glorious Goodwood meeting. Saxon's best horse was Mary, winning the Sefton Handicap at each end of the season, the Liverpool Spring Cup and the Grand Stand Cup at Chester.

1857-January 1859 James Barber, William Mizen
In early 1857, after Samuel Arnold moved on, Saxon and Barber appointed William Mizen, then aged just 20, to train for them at their respective stables of Saxon House and Seven Barrows. The pair jointly owned a Stud in Lancaster, and horses frequently changed ownership between the two, Miss Harkaway having won 3 times for James Barber in the first 5 months of the 1857 season, but in September she ran in Saxon's colours of green and gold with yellow cap to win the Windham Handicap at Warwick's Grand Military meeting before reverting to Barber's colours of brown with white cap when winning the Liverpool Handicap Hurdle at Aintree in November. Mizen continued to train for the pair until his untimely death on Friday 21st January 1859 aged just 22 and is buried in Lambourn Parish churchyard.

February 1859-1861 James Barber, Henry James Rodbourn
Henry James Rodbourn arrived in Lambourn in the mid-1850s and rode for Joseph Saxon at his Saxon House Stables. In January 1859 trainer William Mizen died suddenly and Henry Rodbourn took charge of both Joseph Saxon's Saxon House string and James Barber's Seven Barrows string. Quite often the two owners changed the ownership of their horses, and jointly owned Ashton Paddock Stud in Lancaster, so it seemed logical to just employ the one main trainer. In 1859 Saxon had a particularly good mare named Princess Royal which Rodbourn trained to win a Newmarket Sweepstake, followed by the Trademen's Plate at Derby. The next year Rodbourn trained Brown Duchess to win the New Stakes at Royal Ascot for Joseph Saxon, and a year later that filly gained a Classic victory in the Epsom Oaks at 100/7. By 1861 the relationship between Saxon and Barber became strained, particularly over one horse, Ben Webster, which became owned solely by James Barber and notched wins in the Queens Plate at Newmarket, the Cheshire Welter Cup, two Her Majesty's Plates at the Curragh just 2 days apart, and the prestigious Tradesmen's Plate (later the Chester Cup) at Chester. At this point there became a clear divide between Saxon House and Seven Barrows, most noticeably when Barber and Saxon each entered horses in the same race on multiple occasions, something which they had previously avoided..

1862-1866 George Oates
George Oates, born in 1830, was one of the most respected trainers of his day, training Butterfly (SR 1827) to win the 1860 Epsom Oaks and a year later saddling Kettledrum (SR 2048) to win the 1861 Epsom Derby. For many years he was based at Richmond and Middleham training for Colonel Towneley, although in 1863 Towneley transferred all of his horses to John Scott leaving Oates to become a public trainer., but by then Oates had moved to Seven Barrows Stables in Lambourn. Up until May 1862 George Oates trained in Middleham, although he did venture south to the Stork House stables of John Prince in Lambourn when he prepared Kettledrum for a tilt at the 1861 Epsom Derby which the horse went on to win. Back in Middleham, where Oates trained for Towneley, the stales were purchased by Lord Glasgow to give additional stabling to his trainer Tom Dawson, who had trained in the town for a considerable time. By August 1862 Towneley and Oates purchased Seven Barrows from James Barber and Oates was firmly established at Seven Barrows stables, with a promise from Colonel Towneley that Oates could train his older horses, although he stated that any yearlings would be sent to John Scott to be trained. Towneley and Oates were pioneers, trying out new training ideas, one of which established a Turkish Bath for horses at Seven Barrows in January 1863. The entire process was supervised by their vet Mr Moore and involved introducing hot air through grating over which the racehorse was placed, and an experienced stablehand used friction to 'foster profuse perspiration.' A large syringe of icy cold water was then squirted over the horse before it was scraped and rubbed dry, after which it walked to its box with 'nenewed vigour.' As early as April 1863 Towneley announced that all of his horses would leave Seven Barrows bound for John Scott, leaving Oates to become a public trainer. Oates was well respected and shortly after the announcement Mr W Robinson, amongst others, sent his horses to Seven Barrows. Oates continued to train at Seven Barrows until 1866, when he moved his training enterprise north again. Towards the end of his life Oates trained for Mr Vyner at Fairfield, but George died on Saturday 25th January 1890 aged 59.

1867-1869 Matthew Dawson
The legendary trainer Matthew Dawson trained at Russley Park, near Lambourn until 1866, and then moved to St Mary's Square and on to Heath House stables in Newmarket from where he trained 28 English Classic winners, teaming up with Lord Falmouth and Fred Archer for many of those wins. However, after George Oates left Seven Barrows Matthew Dawson had a small breeding stud there, installing Griffin to act as his stud groom.

1877-February 1891 Charles William Jousiffe
Charles William Jousiffe, born in Herne Bay, Kent on 8th September 1844, as marked on his coffin and gravestone, had his heart set on becoming a jockey from a very early age. After completing his compulsory schooling he became an apprentice to Epsom trainer James Thirkwell, although within 18 months his indentures were transferred to the famous John Osborne, based at Ashgill, Middleham. Although he was given opportunities in high-profile races like the 1862 Cesarewitch aboard York Minster, he struggled to ride winners because the stable was blessed at that time, with more experienced jockeys, so he opted to travel to Belgium to join the stable of Mr Marsden; later in 1864 venturing to Madras, India in search of elusive winners. He rode Actaeon to victory in the 1868 Calcutta Derby, but by then he had also launched his training career. Charles married Mary Fanny Bradford and they had a daughter, Ethel Mary in 1878. Charles rode in public for the final time in 1873, returning to England in 1875 to begin training with a small string in Lambourn, starting with horses owned by H Bird and Lord Kesteven. Jousiffe's career got off to a flying start when he won the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot with Covenanter owned by H Bird. In 1877 he was installed at Seven Barrows stables where he enjoyed a very successful 14 years, and by 1881 his career received another boost when H T Barclay sent him a number of horses. A high point of his training career came in 1890 with 2000 Guineas winner Surefoot, owned by Mr Archie W Merry, who occupied the same box as Bendigo, winner of the inaugural Eclipse Stakes at Sandown worth £10,000, the largest amount for any race at that time. Bendigo was probably his best horse, and certainly was good over a variety of distances, winning the Cambridgeshire, the Lincoln, the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Eclipse Stakes, the Jubilee Stakes and the Champion Stakes. During his time in India Jousiffe put on a lot of weight, and that situation did not improve when he became a full-time trainer, so much so that he was plagued by heart problems and asthma in the latter part of his life and died from an attack of bronchitis on 26th February 1891, aged just 46. His funeral took place at St Michael and All Angels Church, Lambourn and he was buried in the churchyard next to his sister Charlotte who had died 6 years before him. He will always be remembered in the village because the Lych Gate was erected in his memory following a collection for a memorial straight after his funeral. At that funeral there were a huge number of trainers, as well as Thomas Willis, his trusted foreman at Seven Barrows, and local farmer Henry J Willis who also donated a guinea to the memorial fund. However, no mention of Garrett Moore or Herbert Sandy Braime was made at the funeral or on the list of donors to the memorial fund, which implies that it was left to Thomas Willis to take charge at Seven Barrows immediately after Jousiffe's death, ably supported by Garrett Moore and Herbert Braime, previous jockey and Head Lad to Jousiffe. Indeed, on 11th March 1891 The Sportsman newspaper predicted that John Osborne, the Middleham trainer, would take over from Jousiffe, while a month later the Glasgow Evening Post suggested that Garrett Moore had taken charge. In the end it is widely accepted that Scottish ironmaster, Archie Merry, took on the lease of Seven Barrows in March 1891 on the death of Joussiffe and installed Garrett Moore as Manager of the stable, even though Moore also maintained a jumping stable at Walnut Cottage, near Winchester, so Moore, in turn, had a nominated trainer at Seven Barrows to hold the trainers licence. Between March 1891 and October 1891 the nominated trainer at Seven Barrows was Thomas Willis, after which Sandy Braime took over. In his Will, detailed in the Newbury Weekly News and General Advertiser of Thursday 7th May 1891, Charles Jousiffe left £16,629 1s 4d, two-thirds of which was left to his wife Mary, and one third in trust to his daughter Ethel, although there were small gifts left to his brothers and sisters, and specific mention was made of the gift of £50 to his Head Man Thomas Willis.

March 1891-October 1891 Thomas Willis, Archie Merry
At the time of the unexpected death of Charles Jousiffe in February 1891 there were a number of candidates who could have taken charge of Seven Barrows, even if only on a temporary basis. Garrett Moore, who had ridden for Jousiffe, or Herbert Sandy Braime, who was Head Lad, but in the end Archie and C J Merry and other prominent owners gave the position to Thomas Willis, foreman and Head Lad to Jousiffe as the nominee trainer, while Garrett Moore was appointed as the Manager Trainer. Thomas Willis, born circa 1855, came from a humble background but worked his way up to a position of responsibility at Seven Barrows. In the Census of 5th April 1891 he was listed as the foreman at Seven Barrows where he lived with his wife Esther and their two sons. He is not to be confused with Henry J Willis, also listed in the April 1891 Census, who owned a large 420 acre sheep farm in Goose Green, Lambourn, selling hundreds of sheep at any one time, and also owned H J Willis, Land & Estate Agents, Surveyor and Valuer. Thomas Willis trained at Seven Barrows from March 1891, taking charge of such horses as Surefoot, Blankney, Aribet, Scotch Earl, Rokeby, Theophilus and Ammonite, and his greatest training achievement during that brief period in charge was guiding Surefoot to success in the 1891 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown in July. Some records show Moore as the trainer of Surefoot, but all of the sporting papers of the day recorded Thomas Willis as the trainer. At the end of October Thomas Willis relocated to Devizes, Wiltshire, and was replaced by Herbert Sandy Braime as the nominated trainer for Manager Garrett Moore.

November 1891-December 1896 Herbert Sandy Braime
Herbert 'Sandy' Braime died at Westcourt House, Burbage on Monday 23rd September 1935 aged 66 after suffering from heart related problems for a considerable time. He was born in Liverpool in 1869 and served his apprenticeship with Charles Jousiffe at Seven Barrows, eventually becoming his Head Lad. When Charles Jousiffe died in 1891 Braime was expected to succeed him as master at Seven Barrows, and did so after a short period when Thomas Willis was in charge. In the early years of his appointment there was a fire at the stables which reduced the stable to ashes, with several racehorses burning to death. His big break came when Francis Alexander, a prominent owner, transferred his horses from Kingsclere to Seven Barrows, and the trainer rewarded him with his greatest successes when Throwaway won the 1904 Ascot Gold Cup and Andover won the Royal Hunt Cup. Although Braime moved to new training quarters, he did achieve a solitary Classic success when Charlebelle (SR 1795), owned by Mr A P Cunliffe, won the 1920 Epsom Oaks. Late on in his career he trained Hot Bun to success in the 1930 Duke of York Handicap at Kempton and the Liverpool Autumn Cup when owned by M J Wittouck. His final winner was Cornette at Bath on 21st August 1935, and when he died on Monday 23rd September 1935 his son John Simpson Braime was granted a licence to train.

December 1896-June 1899 Henry Sentence, Garrett Moore
When Herbert Sandy Braime decided to move to his own stable as a public trainer at the end of the 1896 season it was left to Garrett Moore to manage Seven Barrows stables, and he was ably supported by his long-term head lad Henry Sentence to act as trainer. Henry Sentence had been with Moore man and boy, and jumped at the chance of training in his own right. He took charge in December 1896, looking after a large string which included Lord of the Dale, Winford, Absentee and Diplomat. Diplomat was an early winner for Sentence, landing the Wishaw Handicap at Lanark, part of a double for Sentence at that meeting. He was equally at home training National Hunt horses, winning the 1898 December Handicap Hurdle at Kempton with Glenbower.
Garrett Moore, born at Eyre-Court, County Galway, on 28th March 1851, was destined to forge a career in racing being the eldest son of John Moore of Jockey Hall, The Curragh. Garrett enjoyed riding in Gentlemens races, but struggled to ride winners, scoring once in 1867, once in 1868, and 5 times in 1869.

His best season came in 1870 when he tied for third place in the Gentleman Riders Title with 18 winners, well behind the runaway winner Arthur Yates who notched up 49 wins. He rode regularly in the Aintree Grand National, firstly in 1872 aboard the unplaced (11th) Scots Grey 33/1, and then again in 1878 when he partnered Pride of Kildare 6/1 to third place beaten 2 lengths and a distance behind Shifnal and Martha. However, in 1879 he won the Grand National on The Liberator (5/1), a horse he had purchased for £500 from the Dublin Sales, beating Jackal and Martha by 10 lengths and a length. In 1885, when increasing weight forced Garrett to hang up his riding boots, he began training at Jockey Hall, The Curragh, recording his greatest success in the 1888 Irish Derby with Theodolite (SR 1949) at 5/2. When Charles Jousiffe died in 1891 it presented Garrett with an opportunity to train in Lambourn, taking over at Seven Barrows in 1892 where he installed Herbert Braime as trainer. When Braime decided to become a public trainer Garrett joined forces with Henry Sentence, for many years his Head Lad. In June 1899 Garrett Moore returned to his former stables at Littleton as he could no longer call on the support of A W and C J Merry, prominent owners at Seven Barrows. He died at Headbourne Worthy, near Winchester, on 23rd May 1908 and was buried in the cemetery at Upper Lambourne where he had enjoyed much success.

July 1899-1900 Percy Sherrard
Percy Sherrard was the son of Newmarket racehorse trainer Richard Sherrard. In 1880 Richard Sherrard had been head lad at Bedford Lodge Stables to Joe Dawson, taking over when Dawson was not fit enough to continue. On 13th November 1882 Richard leased The Nunnery Stables, training for Sir George Chetwynd, but left on 10th December 1884 after 2 seasons. He then trained at Sefton Lodge in 1885 for Caroline, Duchess of Montrose, but she was difficult to work for, and once their relationship broke down he moved in 1887 to Machell Place. In February 1892 Percy Sherrard was still riding, but soon afterwards he began training at Beaudesert, and then in June 1899 he was appointed as trainer at Seven Barrows, training for C J & A W Merry in addition to some horses owned by Garrett Moore. Percy enjoyed a very good 1899 season, winning the Forty-first Biennial Stakes at Royal Ascot with Sir Hercules, the Corinthian Plate at Goodwood with Marthus II, and the Hyde Park Plate at Epsom with a Janissary filly. He later moved to train at Newmarket and was replaced by A Wright.

Herbert Randall, youngest son of Sir Henry Randall, was born in Northampton on 10th February 1877. His father had made his fortune from his shoe factory and was principal shoemaker to the Royal Family. Herbert took out a 14-year lease on Seven Barrows from Lord Craven in 1901, leasing it to Henry Lindemere from June 1902 to 1909 until he and his wife were ready to move onto the estate. Herbert was an excellent, Classic winning jockey who had the honour of riding the great Sceptre, uniquely the winner of 4 of the English Classics, although Randall was blamed for not winning the Derby on Sceptre despite the horse suffering an injury just 10 days before the race, and was subsequently jocked off in the St Leger. He recorded two other Classic victories, apart from the ones aboard Sceptre, firstly in 1903 on Quintessence in the 1000 Guineas and then 4 years later on Glass Doll in the Oaks. He also rode winners on the finest racecourses in Britain, landing the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot twice with Thrush in 1906 and Spanish Prince in 1910, the 1905 Sussex Stakes and 1910 Stewards Cup at Glorious Goodwood with Thrush and Golden Road respectively, the City & Suburban Handicap at Epsom on Dean Swift, and the 1906 July Cup at Newmarket with Thrush. He moved from Kingston Lisle to Seven Barrows with his wife, Amy Florence, in February 1907 where he was ideally placed to train once his riding days were over. Indeed, he began training a small number of National Hunt horses at Seven Barrows in June 1912 despite only riding 7 winners over jumps during his riding career, and even had some schooling hurdles erected on the Seven Barrows gallops. He rode his final Flat winner, Cigar, at Derby Racecourse on 18th November 1914, the last of his 666 winners, and retired from race riding shortly afterwards, never to visit a racecourse again. As if to cement his complete break with racing, in October 1916 the entire contents of his house, as well as his final 4 racehorses, were sold at auction. He died at Swindon, Wiltshire on 1st October 1959 aged 82.

June 1902-June 1906 A Wright, Henry Lindemere
In June 1902 prominent racehorse owned Henry Lindemere leased Seven Barrows from jockey Herbert Randall, who had himself leased it for a 14-year period from Lord Craven. Lindemere appointed A Wright as his trainer and the pair enjoyed much success during the 4 years they were together at Seven Barrows, supported by wealthy owners like Sir Henry E Randall, Donald Fraser, Captain W S Power and Eustace Barlow. Bushy Boy was a frequent winner for the pair, as was Outbreak, who notched up 5 successive victories, which included the Free Handicap Stakes at Newmarket. However, the most successful horse during this period was St Wulfram, which won 10 consecutive races in 1905, after being bought from Lord Carnarvon out of the Park Selling Mile Handicap at Windsor for just 410 guineas, and subsequently landed the 1905 Liverpool Autumn Cup. In February 1905 E J Percy, an owner based at Kingston Warren near Wantage, sold his entire stud, with many lots purchased by A Wright, to be trained at Seven Barrows, and other lots were bought by another Lambourn trainer, Fred Pratt. In June 1906 A Wright terminated his engagement with Henry Lindemere, opting to train elsewhere in Lambourn on his own account.

July 1906-February 1907 Charles Percy Double, Henry Lindemere
In July 1906, after the partnership with A Wright came to an end, owner Henry Lindemere appointed Charles Edward Percy Double as his nominee trainer at Seven Barrows until he got someone more permanent. As well as training for Lindemere, Double trained Bonnie Earl and Pincher for Sir Henry Randall, Smut for Donald Fraser, and Quaver and Lathbury for Eustace Barlow. Double later became Head Lad to Jack Jarvis, later living at South Lodge, Cheveley Park, which is where he died aged 67 on 21st January 1950. In February 1907 Herbert Randall and his wife Amy moved into Seven Barrows house where they made their home for the next 9 years.

1914 Jacobus Martin Van Marle
Whilst Herbert Randall still held the lease, training on occasions and riding on others, in 1914 he decided to ride again, appointing Jacobus Martin Van Marle as the trainer. Van Marle was the assistant of Edward Robson, but failed to raise his game during the 1914 season, managing to train just 3 winners before deciding to train abroad, leaving Henry Beardsley to take over before the end of 1914.

1914-1916 Henry Beardsley
Henry Beardsley, born at Radford, Nottinghamshire in 1864, was training at Downs House in Letcombe Bassett as early as 1898, training specifically for Mr Robson, later moving to Pounds Farm at East Garston in the early years of the 20th century. In the last months of 1914 he transferred to Seven Barrows with a string of 11, but this was reduced to just 6 horses, 3 of which were owned by him, in 1916 in stables where Herbert Randall remained the tenant. He left Seven Barrows by October 1916 when big John Hallick took on the stables along with his own.

November 1916-December 1916 John Hallick
John Hallick, often referred to as 'Big John Hallick', due to being tall and over-weight, began training racing ponies, and in his younger days was an avid yachtsman, before training racehorses in Lambourn for the likes of Lord Villiers. Between November 1916 and December 1916 he was reported to have taken charge at Seven Barrows as an interim measure until a more permanent appointment arrangement could be found. Unfortunately Hallick died in late December 1916 and Percy A O Whitaker was not installed until January 1918.

January 1918-1919 Percy A O Whitaker
Captain Percival Ayfon Onley Whitaker, born in Suffolk on 31st May 1870, was educated at Wellington College before launching a successful military career firstly in the Sussex Harriers and later in the Essex Militia. He was a noted amateur jockey, winning the Amateur riders Championship in 1907 with 30 wins, although his most successful year was in 1908 when he won the Championship again, with 26 wins, but also partnered Rory O'More to success in the 1908 National Hunt Steeplechase. He then finished third on Lawyer III in the Grand National behind Rubio, but the horse died the next day, and in a post-mortem it was revealed Lawyer III had only one lung. Percy was an equally accomplished trainer on the Flat and over jumps, starting his training career at 3 Royston stables before transferring all of the horses to Seven Barrows in January 1918, maintaining the same group of previous owners, later moving on to Salisbury and Newmarket.

1920-March 1944 Harry Lawson Cottrill
Harry Lawson Cottrill, born in 1883, was a leading racehorse trainer for a period spanning both World Wars, spending 24 years at Seven Barrows, where he famously taught the Dukes of Windsor and Gloucester to ride and built his stable up to a string of 70 horses at his peak, entertaining owners such as Lord Derby, Lord Sefton, Sir Abe Bailey and Mrs Sofer Whitburn. His most famous victories came in 1927 with Adam's Apple (SR 1983) in the 2000 Guineas, and in 1936 when Lovely Rosa (SR 1731) landed the Epsom Oaks. His own personal favourite was Irish Elegance which won the 1918 Cambridgeshire Hunt Cup, a War-time substitute for the Royal Ascot Royal Hunt Cup, and the 1918 July Cup while Cottrill was based at Tarporley in Cheshire. A year later he won the 1919 Royal Hunt Cup, Salford Borough Handicap by a commanding 6 lengths, and Portland Handicap after he had moved his training base to Foxhill where he resided for just over a year. In 1920 he moved his entire string to Seven Barrows, Lambourn where he was highly successful for the next 25 years, winning back to back Stewards Cups at Glorious Goodwood in 1920 and 1921 with Western Wave and Service Kit. He won the early season 1922 Lincoln Handicap with Granely, the end of season 1936 Cambridgeshire with Dan Bulger, the 1919 Cesarewitch with Ivanhoe, the 1936 Goodwood Stewards Cup with Solerina, and famously landed consecutive wins in the 1922 and 1923 Chester Cup with Chivalrous. In January 1938 he broke his leg whilst hunting with the Quorn Hounds in Leicestershire. On Sunday 4th June 1939 his Seven Barrows stables were alight and a number were destroyed before the fire was discovered. Four racehorses were burned to death, including Bizou and Slip On owned by Captain Lionel Montagu, Deep Level owned by Sir Abe Bailey, and Brave Warrior which Harry Cottrill had purchased for 730 guineas after it won the Tadworth Selling Plate at Epsom on 25th May 1939. Whilst losing 4 horses was a tragedy, 48 other horses were fortunately led to safety. Throughout his career he notched up 17 Royal Ascot winners, the first of which was Irish Elegance in the 1919 Royal Hunt Cup, and the last of which was Caerloptic in the 1939 Royal Hunt Cup. In March 1944 he temporarily gave up training because of the difficulties of hiring staff due to the War, concentrating on farming instead, and eventually retired permanently in 1945, after purchasing his former stables at Foxhill in the hopes that his son, Humphrey, would train at the stables in 1946. In the event Humphrey trained more successfully in Newmarket. Harry died in Newbury on Tuesday 18th January 1955 aged 72.

January1946-September 1947 Edward R J Bennett
Edward John Ronald Bennett moved to Seven Barrows from his Kinston Warren Stables, near Wantage, at the start of 1946, replacing Harry Cottrill. His stable star was Brightwater who notched up a number of successes, but he was towards the end of his training career and retired in September 1947, opting to buy a farm in Gloucestershire. He was replaced at Seven Barrows by William Payne senior who moved from Epsom.

October 1947-September 1955 William Payne senior
William Payne snr, born at Southminseter, Essex on 23rd November 1884, was educated at Maldon Grammar School, Essex and enjoyed hunting from a very early age. He became a professional jockey in 1903, riding his first winner in that year at Chelmsford, and by 1911 was crowned Champion National Hunt jockey. He launched his training career at Farthingstone, Northamptonshire before transferring to Epsom, but in October 1947 he replaced the newly retired E J R Bennett at Seven Barrows. Early in his first season at Seven Barrows Roscoff, 3rd in the Cesarewitch, and Firemaster, joined the stables, increasing the string from the 40 Bill had brought with him from Epsom. Soon afterwards R Bennett decided to send his horses to Payne, and Bill also purchased a number of yearlings for Lord Abergavenny. His son, also called William, was born at Bugbrooke, Northants on 25th July 1910 and also became a National Hunt jockey, riding his first race under rules at Gatwick in 1924 when aged 14. In 1952 he joined his father at Seven Barrows where their principal owners were Lord Abergavenny and the Duchess of Norfolk. On Thursday 29th September 1955 the pair moved from Seven Barrows to Lambourn House stables, at which point Bill Payne senior retired and passed his training licence to his son.

February 1956-1957 Ian Lomax
Ian Raymond Lomax, born in Fulham on 30th July 1931, was an excellent cricketer, playing numerous Minor Counties matches for Wiltshire, but was also Joint Master of the Craven Hunt. He married Rosemary, daughter of Lincolnshire farmer W F Ransom, in 1953, the pair sharing hunting and racing interests, and in January 1956 he successfully applied for a trainer's licence, although, in truth, it was on behalf of his wife who, at that time, was not allowed by the Jockey Club to own a licence of her own. After recording 4 early season National Hunt winners the Lomax's moved to Seven Barrows Stables in February, replacing Bill Payne senior. They had a daughter, Sarah, who was also keen on sport and subsequently married formula one racing driver James Hunt on 17th December 1983. One of the most successful horses during their brief residence at Seven Barrows was Hart Royal, but in 1957 Ian Lomax sold Seven Barrows and Kingston Warren to Derek Candy. Candy chose to expand Kingston Warren, thereby reducing the size of the Seven Barrows Estate which was taken over by David Hastings.in 1957.

1957-Feb 1965 David Hastings
David Hastings launched his training career at Blandford, Dorset in 1937, recording his first winner, Sweet Will, at Ludlow soon afterwards. During the War his training career was interrupted when he joined the RAF, but after the War he resumed his career at East Ilsley, and it was from that base that he sent out Magnetic North (SR 1954) to win the 1956 Irish St Leger. In 1957 he moved to Seven Barrows, replacing Ian and Rosemary Lomax who had occupied the historic stables for a little over a year. Hastings remained at Seven Barrows for 8 years, transferring to Weathercock House, Upper Lambourn, in February 1965 after Peter Walwyn bought Seven Barrows. He remained at Weathercock House until December 1968 when replaced by Simon Morant.
1956 Irish St Leger at the Curragh MAGNETIC NORTH (SR 1954) 8/1 owned by W A Phillips, trained by David Hastings and ridden by Bill Elliott

1965-June 1992 Peter Walwyn
Peter Tyndall Walwyn, born on 1st July 1933, son of Charles Walwyn and cousin of fellow Lambourn trainer Fulke Walwyn and his twin sister Helen, later Helen Johnson-Houghton, was educated at Charterhouse School, and was always destined to become a racehorse trainer. He began his working life as assistant trainer to Geoffrey Brooke at Clarehaven Stables in Newmarket, but in October 1960 he took out his own trainer's license, albeit to enable his cousin Helen Johnson-Houghton to train, as the Jockey Club did not allow women to hold their own licence in those days. He purchased Windsor House Stables in 1960 from Syd Mercer. However, by the start of the 1965 season he, and his wife Virginia, but universally known as Bonk, had moved to Lambourn to take charge at Seven Barrows Stables, remaining in the village for the rest of his life. By the 1970s he was recognised as one of the finest trainers in the country, landing his first Classic success in the 1970 1000 Guineas with Humble Duty (SR 1966), and winning back-to-back Flat Race Trainers Championships in 1974 and 1975. In 1974 he won his second Classic when Polygamy (SR 1847) was victorious in the Epsom Oaks for owner Louis Freedman. However, it was in 1975 he gained his greatest success, winning the 1975 Epsom Derby, Irish 2000 Guineas, Irish Derby and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes with his beloved Grundy. In total he notched up 24 Royal Ascot successes, the undoubted highlight of which was the 1971 Ascot Gold Cup with Rock Roi. In June 1992 he moved to Windsor House Stables, allowing Nicky Henderson to transfer to Seven Barrows Stables in exchange. Peter continued to train until his retirement in 1999, although he maintained his links with racing by serving as the Chairman of the Lambourn Trainers Association, which he had been a leading force in setting up a decade beforehand. In the same year he was given honorary membership of the Jockey Club, and in 2012 he was further honoured with an MBE for services to horseracing. His wife, Bonk, died on 2nd January 2014 and Peter died 3 years later on 7th December 2017 aged 84.

June 1992-present Nicky Henderson
Nicholas John Henderson OBE, son of Johnny Henderson and his wife Katherine Beckwith-Smith, was born on 10th December 1950 and educated at Eton College. He was always likely to carve out a career in racing for his father, who died in 2003, loved the sport and was one of the founding members of the Racecourse Holdings Trust. To commemorate his father's achievements in the sport Cheltenham renamed one of their races the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase. Nicky, whose Godfather was Field Marshall Montgomery, rode as an amateur, notching up 69 wins, notably the 1977 Foxhunters Chase at Aintree on Happy Warrior and the Imperial Cup on Acquaint, and gained invaluable experience as assistant to Fred Winter for 4 years between 1974 and 1978, learning his trade from a man who had both ridden and trained Grand National winners. In 1976 he married Diana and the couple were blessed with 3 daughters, Camilla, Tessa and Sarah. In July 1978 he successfully applied for a trainer's licence in his own right and began training at Windsor House Stables in Lambourn. Whilst at Windsor House he became Champion National Hunt Trainer for 2 consecutive years from 1985 to 1987, following on from his former boss Fred Winter. It was a highly successful period for Nicky, winning the Champion Hurdle 3 years running with See You Then between 1985 and 1987, and he also won the 1992 Queen Mother Champion Chase with Remittance Man. During his time at Windsor House he notched up two Triumph Hurdle wins with First Bout in 1985 and Alone Success in 1987, and an Arkle Challenge Trophy with Remittance Man in 1991. In all, in this early period of his career, between 1978 and 1992, he won 14 races at the Cheltenham Festival. He was then offered the chance to transfer to the historic Seven Barrows training establishment, complete with its private gallops, exchanging places with Epsom Derby winning trainer Peter Walwyn, with Walwyn moving to Windsor House Stables.
Although he developed his early training talents at Windsor House, honing his skill year on year, when he moved to Seven Barrows he was able to extend his string and become a master of his trade, recognised worldwide as one of the top trainers of all time. His record number of Cheltenham Festival successes provides sufficient evidence for any doubters. He has worked with some of the best jockeys of their generation, notably Tony McCoy, Mick Fitzgerald, Barry Geraghty and, more recently, Nico De Boinville. Many of the most prominent owners in the country have trusted him to develop their charges to their full potential, in particular HM Queen Elizabeth II, HM The Queen Mother, J P McManus, Robert Waley-Cohen and, of late, Simon Munir and Isaac Souede. Up to the end of 2022 he had recorded 8 Champion Hurdle successes, 2 Cheltenham Gold Cup winners, 3 Hennessy Gold Cup winners and 3 King George VI Chase winners; however, he is still missing a Grand National winner on his CV. Although there have been some setbacks, especially in 2009 when he was banned for 3 months, he came back stronger and more determined, and has now been crowned Champion National Hunt Trainer on 6 occasions. On 31st July 2018 he recorded his 3000th winner, but he has some way still to go to catch Martin Pipe's total of 4183 winners, although the racing world knows it would be folly to say that Nicky Henderson will not catch him. He was awarded an OBE in the 2020 New Years Honours list for services to horse racing.
